Tecno is back in 2017 with its flagship line of Phantom smartphones with the Tecno Phantom 8, and the company looks to be officially moving into the ‘Big Boys’ game. The Tecno Phantom 8 packs a rear dual camera setup and a massive 20MP selfie camera, Octa-core Helio P25 chipset, 6GB of RAM and a 3,500mAh battery.

Design & Display

The Tecno Phantom 8 offers a plastic backing and metal sides and also, Tecno keeps the top, bottom and side bezels up front (which most top smartphone makers have, to an extent, got rid of already in 2017). The slight curve at the sides on both the front and back should make handling easier. Early reviews, however claims the Phantom 8 is a fingerprint magnet, so, a small piece of cotton cloth might come in handy to get rid of the smudges. Better still, you can find a suitable case or skin.


On the display side, the Tecno Phantom 8 comes with a big 5.7 inch screen that offers a Full HD resolution at 1080 x 1920 pixels. At 402 ppi, the Phantom 8 should provide a great viewing pleasure and if you read a lot of text, expect them to appear sharp and crisp. The device comes in three colours; Champagne Gold, Phantom Black and Galaxy Blue.

Camera, Performance & Storage

Tecno makes a statement yet again in the camera department with the Phantom 8. There is now a dual camera setup at the back, with one rocking a 13 megapixel sensor and the other a 12 megapixel one, both of which gets an LED flash for low light shots. The camera can shoot 1080p videos at 30fps.


On the front, however, is a single 20 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, which expectedly, should snap great selfies at almost every lighting situations.


Tecno Phantom 8 also comes with great power, as you get an Octa core Helio P25 processor. An ample 6GB of RAM backs it up and you get 64GB on-board storage, which can be further bolstered with an SD card of up to a behemoth 2TB.


Not sure why Tecno didn’t use the better Helio P30 (like on the Gionee M7) or the more powerful ‘X’ series chipsets from Mediatek, but for the most part, this configuration should provide for great multitasking experience and should handle even the heaviest apps and games with ease. The Phantom 8 runs on Android 7 with HiOS 3.0 overlay. However, no info yet on whether the Phantom 8 will get an early Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade.

Battery & Other features

The Tecno Phantom 8 packs a 3,500mAh juicer, which compensates well for the amount of power it is carrying, so expect at least a full day of normal use before reaching for the charging cable. The device supports dual SIM and super fast 4G LTE internet connection.  The Tecno Phantom 8 also comes with a fingerprint sensor on the back for that extra security.


Other connectivity features on the Tecno Phantom 8 are a USB Type-C port, Bluetooth and Wi-fi 802.11/b/g/n.

Price & Availability

The Tecno Phantom 8 is not yet available in Nigeria and Kenya, should make its way to all leading online stores as soon as it drops.  The Tecno Phantom 8 price in Nigeria starts at around N135,000. The Phantom 8 is built around a great camera experience, so, to get a similar or even greater value if you are a photo addict, you can opt for the Nokia 8 or the Infinix Note 4 pro.
